ICE'S STAR INFORMANT FEARS FOR HIS LIFE

After nearly four years of undercover work, Eduardo Ramirez Peyro found himself a hunted man. In August 2004, unidentified individuals attempted to kill Ramirez Peyro in a What-A_Burger parking lot. Ramirez Peyro's assailants shot and killed one of the former informant's associates. In the aftermath of this murder, US authorities took Mr. Ramirez Peyro into "protective custody." Shortly thereafter, the federal government initiated deporation proceedings against ICE's star informant. Mr. Ramirez Peyro has insisted that return to Mexico would be a veritable death sentence. This fall, a federal immigration tribunal ruled that Mr. Ramirez Peyro could not be deported to Mexico. Mr. Ramirez Peyro is nonetheless still in federal custody.
